To find background and related information for the governor of your choice, you will have to use the following websites: Harvey Kronberg's Quorum Report - www.quorumreport.com Texas House of Representatives - www.house.state.tx.us Burnt Orange Report - www.burntorangereport.com Texas Tribune - http://www.texastribune.org/ Texas State Library & Archives Commission - https://www.tsl.texas.gov/governors/chron.html (Links to an external site.) Legislative Reference Library - www.trl.state.tx.us/legeleaders/governors/displayProcs.cfm?governor (Links to an external site.) Get yourself familiar with these websites – the information they contain is overwhelming but can help you build a profile of your governor. After you have made your selection of which governor you will provide your analysis on, your essay must cover the following details: 1. Your selection of the governor you will cover & the reason for your choice 2. Describe that governor’s term of office (describe term of office served, elections to serve as governor, issues of interest pursued for that session) 3. Centerpiece of legislation while governor (every governor has a key piece of legislation that they want to get passed – describe what that legislation is) 4. Discussion – this relates to the topics in class that we have discussed so far: the powers evolved of the governor via the Texas Constitution, your governor's ability to work within the frames dictated by the constitution as well as how effective do you think that governor was representing the state in national matters? How did they work with the members of the presiding officers of the Legislature (Lieutenant Governor & Speaker of the House), did that governor work within the parameters of his or her executive and legislative powers to work on issues and the budget? A works cited page must be included with 4 sources used – your sources will be: • State of the state address given by that governor – either video or text • Textbook and/or lecture notes • Official legislation – cited for author (member who wrote it and year/session it was done) • A Newspaper clipping relating to that governor **The links provided above will have that information (particularly the Texas State Library & Archives Commission and the Legislative Reference Library). Those sources in particular gives plenty of detail and legislative action for each of the governors that you may write about. **Each source must be used and properly cited. The citation style to be used will be the APSA style -- the website is found at http://citesource.trincoll.edu/apsa/apsa.html (Links to an external site.) (including works cited).
