The ability to effectively compare and evaluate information is a critical component of not only scholarly writing and research but also our everyday lives. Comparison plays an important role in how we make decisions about our jobs, classes, mates, friends, and so much more. Knowing how to assess and compare is a valuable critical thinking skill that will benefit you throughout your life. For your next assignment, you will write your own 3-4 page comparison/contrast essay in which you will compare and contrast two relatable ideas (issues, viewpoints, activities, etc.). Your paper must have a strong introduction that includes any relevant background information about the items you are comparing. I will be looking for an interesting “hook” in the opening sentences as well as a clear and detailed thesis that states the points of your comparison. Remember to think about the inverted pyramid as you move from general to specific information in your introduction. The body of your paper should be organized in either point-by-point or block method and should follow established criteria that you support with specific examples and details. You must devote equal time to both items you are comparing. Your paper needs to be typed in MLA format. We will spend the next few sessions discussing relevant texts, researching topics, and studying organization.
